Remote Desktop Services Connector for System Center Virtual Machine Manager

The RDS Connector for VMM enables Remote Desktop Services in Windows Server 2008 R2 to use the virtual machine placement capabilities of Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 for personal virtual desktops and virtual desktop pools.

RDS Connector for VMM lets Remote Desktop Services in Windows Server 2008 R2 use the virtual machine placement capabilities of System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 (VMM 2008 R2) for personal virtual desktops and virtual desktop pools. A personal virtual desktop is a virtual machine that is assigned to a user account in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) and is hosted on a Remote Desktop Virtualization Host (RD Virtualization Host) server. A virtual desktop pool is a group of identically configured virtual machines (hosted on a RD Virtualization Host server) that can be assigned to multiple users. Because the virtual machines are identically configured, the user sees the same virtual desktop, regardless of which virtual machine in the virtual desktop pool the user connects to.

RDS Connector for VMM enables communication between a Remote Desktop Connection Broker (RD Connection Broker) server and a VMM server. An RD Connection Broker server is used to provide users access to their personal virtual desktops or to a virtual machine in a virtual desktop pool. With RDS Connector for VMM installed and configured, if the virtual machine (that is configured as a personal virtual desktop or as part of a virtual desktop pool) cannot be started on its current RD Virtualization Host server, VMM will select the best RD Virtualization Host server on which to place the virtual machine, based on the host rating determined by VMM.

RDS Connector for VMM, the RD Connection Broker role service, and the VMM server can all be installed on the same computer, on separate computers, or in some other combination. For example, the VMM server and RDS Connector for VMM can be installed on the same computer. The basic steps for installing and configuring RDS Connector for VMM are the same in each case, although some additional configuration steps are required if you use separate computers.
