Create an automated citrix server Installation with RIS and Orca.

Deploying W2k3 servers with Citrix Metaframe Presentation server automatically, might look difficult, but it really isn't that hard. You don't really need expensive tools, you can just do it with free tools provided by Microsoft. Once you know witch tools to use and witch buttons to press, it is rather an easy and most convenient way to deploy your Citrix Farm.

Besides Microsoft's RIS (Remote Installation Service) to automatically deploy W2k3, I useOrca.exe. Orca.exe is a database table editor for creating and editing Windows Installer packages and merge modules. The tool provides a graphical interface for validation, highlighting the particular entries where validation errors or warnings occur.

This tool is only available in the Platform SDK Components for Windows Installer Developers. It is provided as an Orca.msi. After installing the Platform SDK Components for Windows Installer Developers, double click Orca.msi (%programfiles%\Microsoft Platform SDK\Bin) to install the Orca.exe file.

Creating a RIS-installation

Before we can create a RIS-installation, the RIS-service must be installed and authorized in DHCP. To install, just install Remote installation Services from the windows component wizard (Control Panel -> Add Remove Software).

Once RIS is installed and authorized in Active Directory, we can add an installation-image by walking trough the wizard after clicking ‘add' on the images tab (dsa.msc -> <Server> -> properties -> remote install tab). Be sure to add a Windows Server 2003 image.
