Bandwidth Impact Of ClearType In RDP
Tuesday, 21 August 2007 by Michel Roth
Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services embodies several significant enhancements. One of the less significant but more visible enhancements is the support for ClearType (making fonts look nice and smooth on LCD screens) in Terminal Server sessions. One of course wonders how does impact the bandwidth a session uses. Well, you're about to find out because someone researched it!

Shawn Bass just pointed me to a very interesting article by a keen guy called Helge Klein of Sepago ( known from their sepagoProfile product). In this article he writes about some testing he did with ClearType support on Windows Server 2008 Beta 3 to see how significant the bandwidth impact is. You should definitely read the entire article but the catch is that according to Helge, enabling ClearType could cost you three times the bandwidth. You are forewarned....

Read the article here. Also be sure to check out the rest of his website. Wonderful content!
