Connection Broker Review (VMware, Citrix, VAS and Leostream)
Thursday, 10 January 2008 by Michel Roth

A couple of days ago I ran into an article by the "Free Wyse Monkeys ". Even though the name made me smile, the article I was reading was very serious. The guys put together a comprehensive review of the four big connection brokers currently in the market: Leostream, Provision Networks VAS, VMware VDM and Citrix XenDesktop Server 2.0.

I've been meaning to read the article thoroughly, which it most definitely deserves, but because of the sheer length of the article (20 pages in the most tiny font I have ever seen), I have not had time to read it entirely. I usually try to read most of the papers before referring you to it but I don't want to withhold it from it any longer.

The monkey's thorough testing proclaims the VAS 5.9 - Provision Networks "Virtual Access Suite"as the winner. That being said, they also note that this depends heavily on what features you want out of a Connection Broker.

But the real question - who was the winner? Well the overwhelming answer is - it depends. The one thing I got out of this review is there is no "perfect" broker and we need a new VDI protocol for Windows. I really thought the big vendors VMware and particularly Citrix would steal the market however it looks like VMware's product is too new and Citrix still don't get VDI is not deployed like Presentation Server is. Its wide open and the competition still fierce and that means one thing for you and me, innovation and more great software at lower prices. I have had my eyes opened to VAS, LeoStream is still carving a niche as a broker with a difference and VMware and Citrix have really only just started their VDI play - lets do this again same time next year and see what you, the end user, bought!

Even though VDI is hyped a lot, this is the first detailed article I've come across on the subject VDI Brokers. So be sure to read the Great Connection Broker Shoot Out.

I guess they've taken it offline. I do not know why.

The announcement of the article is in Google cache.
Sadly, I do not have a local copy.

I read the article and recall info about Silverstone, which correct me if I'm wrong is a closed Beta and those participating are under a non disclosure. Maybe that's why it was pulled.

Indeed that could very well be... I remember reading somebody else wanting to post their experiences also but got a definite "NO" from Vmware. Why not repost, only without VDM, Wysemonkeys?

I heard from the author of the article last week. He pulled the review because, in hindsight, he did not like the idea of comparing beta version to production version of products. He's planning on reposting the review without the beta version (VMware and Citrix).
