Default Printer Tool: DEFSET
Tuesday, 28 August 2007 by Michel Roth
It's a shame that a tool like DEFSET should be around. Don't get me wrong: I think it's a great thing that Warren Simondson has made this tool. Its just that something that sounds so trivial as saving you're default printer doesn't seem to work with just Terminal Server or Citrix. And you probably know it's true. If every time I heard the complaint "my default printer is the wrong one" would have killed one of my brain cells, I'd be Paris Hilton by now (I'm getting there). Any way, fact of the matter is that Warren wrote a nice little tool to help you out in retaining the users default printer when they are roaming the farm.

DEFSET is a standalone Windows GUI tool designed to manage default printer selections on a per user basis. DEFSET allows the user to change their default printer during program execution, and writes this information to an ini file located in the users individual windows directory. This information is then used to remember the selected the default printer for later sessions.

The program should be run at startup, allowing a user to set their default printer. The program can then be minimized to the system tray, and opened at any time to change the default printer. If a new printer has been added during the last access of DEFSET, the program will refresh the set of available printers, allowing a user to select it from the list.
