Delivering Office 2007 Using Citrix Application Streaming
Friday, 25 January 2008 by Michel Roth
It's kind of ironic. The more popular a particular application is, the harder it is to virtualize. Those of use that have worked with application virtualization a lot know that it's usually quite a hassle to virtualize a popular application like office. Especially Office 2007. Citrix is offering their help in this department though.

Citrix has published a detailed step-by-step guide on how to successfully profile and deliver Office 2007 Enterprise using the Application Streaming feature included with Presentation Server. Due to the complexity and customizations of the Office 2007 applications and associated helper applications, a focus area of this document is the profiling process itself since an „Advanced Install‟ will be required. The document details five (5) steps that are required in order to successfully profile and deliver the Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise suite. The five steps are as follows:

  • Prepare Office 2007
The Office Customization Tool is used to create a customization file(.MSP) that consists of specific settings optimized for the streamed applications. The customization file is applied automatically during the installation of Office 2007.
  • Prepare Office 2007 Interdependent Applications
Office 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and post-SP1 hotfixes are downloaded and extracted into the “Updates” folder for automatic installation.Helper applications such as Adobe Reader and Office 2007 add-ins such as „Save As PDF and XPS‟are also prepared for the profiling process. These helper applications are not necessarily required for the successful operation of the Office 2007 applications, but are recommended in order to increase flexibility.
  • Profile Office 2007
The Citrix Streaming Profiler is used to perform an „Advanced Install‟ for the Office 2007 suite. All core Office applications, add-ins, supporting applications and ActiveXcontrols are packaged within the same profile to allow for inter-isolation communication amongst the various applications.
  • Publish Office 2007
The Citrix Access Management Console is used to publish the various target applications within the Office 2007 Enterprise profile. The applications can either be streamed directly to a client desktop or streamed to a Citrix Presentation Server and then remotely displayed to the end-user via the ICA protocol.
  • Deliver Office 2007
The Office 2007 applications are delivered to the end-user. The end-user accesses the streamed applications using either the Program Neighborhood Agent or the Client for Web. Off-line access can also be configured for applications streamed to the desktop.
