More On HP Virtual Desktop Infrastructure

A new solution from HP offers customers a cost-efficient desktop environment that consolidates physical desktop PCs onto a single server that is centrally hosted and managed within the data center.

The HP Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) was designed to not only make it easy for customers to centrally manage desktops, but because desktops under the infrastructure are virtual and all data resides on the server, it also means added security for sensitive corporate information, said Doug Strain, product marketing manager for virtualization at HP.

The exact products in the solution vary by configuration, but it generally includes HP blade servers, storage, management tools, software and HP services for support, installation and consulting. The software pieces are coming from inside HP as well as from partners, and include products like VMware and Microsoft Virtual Server.

VDI will cut down on the operating costs, as they'll be centrally managed and hosted. It also makes it easier for IT administrators to manage desktops because they can do it in one place rather than having to go out to each individual desktop and manage them one at a time.
