My 60 second analisys of the Microsoft VDI announcment
Thursday, 18 March 2010 by Michel Roth
This is my 60 second analysis of the Microsoft VDI / Desktop Virtualization announcements of today.

This is the press release: http://www.microsoft.com/Presspass/press/2010/mar10/03-18DesktopVirtPR.mspx

1.  Extremely heads-on attack to VMware by MS. I am wondering how VMware can counter (hard since they don’t own the OS)

2.  VDI adoption will take off because VECD effectively is gone. You only need SA which most customers do.

3.  3rd party application virtualization vendors have effectively been killed since the leading application virtualization solution, App-v by MS, just became free for everyone doing VDI

4.  Thin Client vendors should not be happy. Before the announcement VDI was about equally expensive for Rich Clients as for Thin Clients. Today that is not true anymore.

I have always said that Microsoft will only lower the price of VECD when they feel they are ready for the battle with VMware. Today they feel they are ready.

Interesting times! What do you think?

Microsoft still needs to address Client OS licensing for service providers under the SPLA program. Not all companies have SA plans or even know what VECD is.

Giving service providers the ability to sell hosted VDI will help the adoption very quickly.

I question some of the providers that are offering hosted VDI today, and if they are doing it "legally".

One thing I'd say is the majority of Microsoft customers do not have SA, contrary to what you say there.

However, the majority of enterprise customers do have SA, and they'll benefit a lot from this, and would be the initial candidates for VDI anyway.

@Ewan: you really think so? So smaller customers would not have SA?

In any case more of them are likely to get it now I guess. With MDOP / VDI Suite still being a steal, it is a good deal.

app-v free for vdi users? are you sure? isn't it licensed over MDOP?

You are right. It does require a investment still. somewhere between $1 and S10 per user.

I got a question regarding your No. 4 point. I thought thin client vendor should be happy since their thin client will be as powerful as rich client with technology like RemoteFX. Thin Client adoption should rise.

The initiative taken for the concern is very serious and need an
attention of every one. This is the concern which exists in the
society and needs to be eliminated from the society as soon as
possible.

I am very pleased with the thought and don’t feel like adding
anything in it. It a perfect answer.
