Quest Software Virtualization Group Speeds VDI Adoption With New Edition of Quest vWorkspace
Wednesday, 09 September 2009 by Michel Roth
Quest Software, announced that the new release of Quest vWorkspace, a flexible virtual desktop management solution, now integrates with NetApp® storage systems using NetApp FlexClone® instantaneous cloning technology. vWorkspace now also delivers significant advancements in the area of “user experience” by offering new features critical to employee adoption of a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) as a replacement to traditional physical desktops.

NetApp FlexClone technology istantly replicates data volumes and data sets as transparent, virtual copies to increase productivity and save storage space without compromising performance. By saving space with minimal overhead, FlexClone enables companies to cost effectively create all the clones they need to optimize the productivity of their VDI environment.

“NetApp is actively delivering the technology that reduces VDI storage costs and increases performance while making sure of the protection and availability of desktop data.” said Patrick Rogers, vice president of Solutions Marketing at NetApp. “The integration of Quest vWorkspace with the NetApp FlexClone technology delivers significant value to organizations implementing VDI by reducing cost and resource requirements and speeding time to value.”

Improving the User Experience with Virtual Desktops

Critical to VDI user adoption is the ability to reduce differences between a user’s old physical computer and a new virtual desktop. With this latest edition of vWorkspace, Quest continues to advance its Experience Optimized Protocol, which provides a true local-desktop experience for remote virtual desktops, to provide:

·         Enhanced Multi-Monitor Support – virtually every monitor orientation and resolution level is now supported

·         Enhanced Graphics Acceleration – improved presentation speed and quality of graphics on all applications, browsers, videos, essentially any graphic representation on the desktop

·         Enhanced USB Device Support – improved support for audio and video-based USB devices, as well as greater management control of allowable devices

“By providing an integrated solution with NetApp, Quest is addressing key concerns around VDI deployments,” said Simon Pearce, vice president and general manager, Desktop Virtualization Group, Quest Software. “NetApp FlexClone technology’s ability to significantly reduce storage requirements combined with the advanced user experience capabilities in this latest vWorkspace release will help organizations better realize the cost savings and security promise of desktop virtualization.”

A two-time winner of 2008 SYS-CON Virtualization Journal Readers’ Choice Awards and a finalist in the Best of VMworld 2008 awards, vWorkspace is a platform-agnostic, virtual application delivery and dynamic desktop deployment solution. It aggregates application delivery and desktop deployments from any virtualization platform, blade PCs, and Terminal Services to provide enterprise-grade desktop management, transforming the corporate desktop infrastructure into an on-demand service with an optimized user experience for LAN and WAN deployments.
