RTO Software Launches Virtual Profiles
Thursday, 17 January 2008 by Michel Roth
I just found out that RTO Software, well-known for their TScale product, is offering a new product called RTO Virtual Profiles. The name of the product is pretty self-explianatory. It looks like a solution to create and migrate to a hybrid profile strategy.

Virtual is a extreme buzz-word these days but there is a specific market that is opening up with the growing adoptation of VDI. VDI is no miracle cure and it's very similar to SBC. So similar in fact, that it's bound to suffer from the same issues the SBC pioneers faced several years ago. Roaming profiles tend to be become / are a mess. That's why Login Consultants created the FLex Profile Kit.  It's not exactly clear to me how RTO Virtual Profiles works but in essence it is similar to what Flex Profiles or Sepaga Profile does.

One thing is different is that they claim that RTO Virtual Profiles is capable of seamlessly migrating to "a virtual profile". Also RTO Virtual Profiles is intelligent enough to use the "virtual profile path" closest to the user. Here's the complete set of features from their site.

Delivers Faster Logons
Each time a user logs on to a system, RTO Virtual Profiles automatically accesses and synchronizes the user’s data, settings and policies. By radically re-engineering this process, Virtual Profiles streamlines all related actions, eliminating delays during logons.

Data-on-demand: only what’s needed
With RTO Virtual Profiles, only the files that a userneeds during the session are copied from the server. This frees up network bandwidth and slashes logon times. In addition, the solution optimizes group policies that are applied.

Faster Group Policy Object (GPO) processing
Virtual Profiles eliminates “chatty” logon traffic to and from Domain Controllers. The result - in most cases, GPO processing time is reduced to under 1 second, regardless of the number of GPOs processed!

Improve Scalability in Terminal Services Environments
Studies indicate that up to 40% of user connections are idle at any one point in time, This is often due to long logon times, which users respond to by leaving old sessions open, and simply starting new ones. By drastically improving logon times, RTO Virtual Profiles encourages users to log off, then relogon, rather than maintaining inactive sessions. The result is reduced system resource requirements, and improved server scalability.

Automate Enterprise and Site Awareness
Depending on where a user is located, RTO Virtual Profiles takes the most efficient path to access an appropriate server.

Reduce Active Directory Server Load
Improved Group Policy Object processing greatly reduces the traffic to Domain Controller servers, reducing server load, and improving response time.

Leverage a Lightweight Infrastructure
No additional resources are required to benefit from RTO Virtual Profiles. Our lightweight infrastructure eases right into your LDAP environment. Quickly. Smoothly. No extras needed. You don’t even have to learn proprietary scripts. It’s that simple.

Enhance User Flexibility painlessly
RTO Virtual Profiles enables settings for any individual user to follow that user - anywhere, anytime, to any desktop in your system. Virtualized profiles eliminate the need for file and data re-direction. This provides an ideal user experience, especially for “chatty” applications that perform large amounts of disk I/O.

Eliminate Data Corruption Problems
By automatically tracking file and registry changes per session, RTO Virtual Profiles permits individual users to be logged onto multiple sessions (when that is needed) at the same time, without registry or profile corruption.

More reliable than Roaming profiles
Faster and easier to maintain than Flex™ Profiles. Now, profiles can roam with your users no matter where they go. Access is not dependent on device or location. And the capability for conditional or streaming profiles enables transparency as users log on, regardless of their changing conditions.

Make Data Integrity and Replication Risk Free
Other approaches have inherent problems associated with data management which can cause problems downstream. You know the issues – profiles become corrupted, data is deleted, and frustrations ensue. RTO Virtual Profiles safeguards you from these unwanted occurrences.
