RTO Software Patents DLL Rebasing
Wednesday, 16 January 2008 by Michel Roth
RTO Software has recieved the patent on DLL rebasing or at least that is how I read the press release. This would be interesting as there are many vendors out there who also perform DLL rebasing (AppSense for example). Citrix licensed this technology from RTO to include in Presentation Server 4.0.

RTO Software announced today that they have been awarded a U.S. patent, titled: "Dynamically Setting the Optimal-based Address of Process Components." The patent covers a technique that significantly improves the performance and scalability of applications running in a Microsoft Windows Server environment. The patent outlines the process for monitoring how Windows applications load and the assignment of its DLLs to memory. Application developers typically select the default DLL address assigned by their compiler. When Windows attempts to load applications requesting the same DLL address, a "relocation" or re-assignment is required. The re-assignment of addresses is memory intensive - and ultimately creates a drag on resources.

Press release.
