Server Upgrade Fails When A Later Version Of The ICA Client Is Already Installed
Friday, 07 April 2006 by Michel Roth
Something to be aware of: ugrading an MetaFrame XP or MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0 server to Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 fails when the 9.15 ICA client is installed on the server using the .msi package before the upgrade.

This is causeb by the installation of Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 includes the 9.0 ICA client. Due to the nature of MSI installation, the older version of the client does not install over a newer version. This causes the entire installation to fail with the following error message:

"Error 28505 you cannot replace the existing version of Program Neighborhood Agent with an earlier version. The installer will now exit."

Using the documented property CLIENT_UPGRADE=No also fails, but with a different error message:

"Setup detected a previous version of Program Neighborhood or Program Neighborhood Agent on your system. Setup has been configured so that it will not upgrade earlier versions of the client. You must first remove the older clients before upgrading to this client version. Setup will now exit."
