Several VMware Product Releases And Other VMware news
Tuesday, 01 May 2007 by Michel Roth
Vmware has been VERY busy lately. First the was the news that VMware will be offering approximately 10% of their Class A Common Stock in a IPO they and while doing so VMware inadvertently also revealed that they acquired Propero (VDI broker vendors watch out!) some time ago actually.

Next is the news that several product have been updated to new builds. Although no new earth-shattering features have been added, it does encompass a lot of (security) bug fixes. Check out:

VMware Workstation 5.5.4
VMware ACE 1.0.3
VMware Player 1.0.4
VMware Server 1.0.3

The coolest release however is the release of VMware Converter 3.0.1. This release actually, in addition to bugfixes, has some new features:

VMware Converter imports VMware Consolidated Backup images
Converter can restore Consolidate Backup images into ESX Server machines, and can import them into VMware standalone virtual machines. Converter supports restoring Consolidated Backup images of any guest operating system type.

VMware Converter imports certain StorageCraft ShadowProtect images
Converter can import ShadowProtect images, with some limitations.

VMware Converter provides an experimental command line interface for migrations
VMware provides p2vTool as a tool for migrating physical and virtual source machines with a command line interface. Support for this CLI is Experimental.

Also, VMware announced that VMware Workstation 6 has RTMed. It won't be long until it's officially released. In fact, while you're waiting you might want to read up on the rather nifty capability of Vmware Workstation 6 to record/replay Virtual machine sessions.
