The Importance Of The Presentation Protocols In VDI |

In his article Brian discusses the different approaches the different vendors are taking in their VDI product. The bulk of the people however will use VDI via a screenscraping protocol: RDP or ICA. Brian also mentions that with hosting virtual desktops that the 20 Kbps for RDP or ICA needs to be demystified. In fact, I think that this myth is the source of a lot of misunderstanding in current SBC implementations. The fact that screenscraping protocols (such as RDP and ICA) to many people is synonymous with low bandwidth usage is very concerning. This concern unfortunately isn't limited to the VDI train that is coming. Many, many current SBC implementations that offer a published -Terminal Server based- desktop suffer from fatal latencies due to congested WAN links. Heck, I've even seen cases where this occurred in LAN environments (100Mbps). The groove of VDI being that flexible, just-like-your-home-PC that the vendors are sending out will probably make these issues even more common. Let’s hope people are going to be aware of these possible issues when VDI really starts to take off. Read Brian's article.
