Thin Client Power Savings |

So whether you share Gore-ian sentiments about the environment or whether you want to save some money on power (so you have enough budget to equip the administrative staff with 24" screens), you can not ignore the fact that Thin Clients indeed do consume less power than their Fat equivalents. And that of course saves you tons of money. This sounds rather easy right? Well, it's definitely not that easy. Just doing a comparison in the different power costs are associated with Thin Clients versus Fat Clients is very naieve. There's a lot more you need to take in account. Think for example about management costs, the ability for your company to cope with changes, initial investment costs just to name a few. However just to give you an idea of how much money Thin Clients could potentially save you by their lower power consumption, Neoware did a small calculation of what using their Thin Clients versus a Dell Optiplex 740. So if you would replace, oh say, 35,000 Dell Optiplex 740 PCs with Neoware e90 Thin Clients, the energy cost savings could be up to $1.9 million per year. This figure of course is a typical press release figure and heavily depends. For starters it depends on what you pay for power. These Neoware figures were for example based on the US national KWH rate of $0.0849. If you were to live in the Netherlands the KWH rate would about $0,12 (meaning you would be saving more). This calculation also heavily depends on the maximum power supply wattage. For the Dell Optiplex 740 Neoware used the 380W number. Although it is true that this Dell Optiplex 740 has the potential to use 380 Watts, it almost never does so. So it does depend on what the device uses on average. So knowing all these things still doesn't make doing a good cost savings calculation easy but it does help. It's worth checking out the Neoware calculation I mentioned, if only for reference. Remember, this is not my calculation and I don't endorse it in any way. It just helps to show that one of the traditional advantages that Thin Clients used to have still exist today: their lower power consumption. |
