VMware announces Embedded ESX: ESX Server 3i
Tuesday, 11 September 2007 by Michel Roth
VMware has officially announced their embedded hypervisor VMware ESX Server 3i. It seems a pretty good move by VMware at a pretty good time. ESX Server is considered to be the leading hypervisor at the moment but you can never know what will happen if the behemoth from Redmond steps onto the battlefield. Releasing ESX 3i while ESX is still synonymous with hypervisor would be the best bet. Also, OS virtualization by means of a hypervisor is becoming more and more mainstream (if it isn’t mainstream already). VMware ESX Server 3i is to be integrated in server systems from Dell, Fujitsu, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, HP, IBM, NEC and others.

“VMware ESX Server 3i is a “bare metal” hypervisor that partitions a physical server into multiple secure and portable virtual machines. Designed for optimal scalability and performance, VMware ESX Server 3i’s innovative new architecture also provides unmatched security, reliability and manageability in a compact, 32 MB package. VMware ESX Server 3i would be the only hypervisor on the market today that does not incorporate a general-purpose operating system, which frees it from the many challenges involved in maintaining a general purpose operating system.”
