Windows Server 2008 As A Workstation OS
Friday, 29 February 2008 by Michel Roth
Windows Server 2008 is being launched officially today. What better time then to point you to this piece of information. Warning: the following information is extremely geekish and might ruin your chances with beautiful women....

But who cares? What can be more fulfilling than having Microsoft's newest server operating system running on your laptop? Although it needs some work, it can be done. I ran into this page that details the steps that the author deems necessary to make Windows Server 2008 fit for use as a workstation alert. You should:

  • Enable Hardware Virtualization (if your laptop has a x64 capable CPU, if you BIOS has this enabled you should sue someone)
  • Install the latest Graphics and Audio drivers ( no drivers no glory)
  • Desktop Experience Feature ( see? Microsoft wants you to do this)
  • Themes ( disabled by default, but this shouldn't stop you)
  • Search ( since I always make a mess out of my desktop, I need something to help me find my way in this mess)
  • Disable Shutdown Event Tracker (annoying enough as it is, let alone on a desktop, Almost as annoying as the language bar)
  • Audio ( everything is getting lower on energy and sound, so are servers. But my desktop. Blast the speakers!)
  • SuperFetch ( gimme more!)
  • Get a codec pack ( or you will be stuck to AVI the rest of your life)
  • Enable Hyper-V ( what can be cooler than running Windows Vista on your Windows Server 2008 desktop...?)
  • Processor Scheduling ( stuff in the background doesn't deserve any attention)
  • Visual Effects ( do you think I will listen to all those 3439854 pictures before I find the one I need?)
  • Power Options  ( go for it, hug that tree, go green!)
  • IE Enhanced Security ( also very high in my "annoy the cr*p out of me-list")

So now you have your Windows Server 2008 installation as close to a desktop OS as you'll ever have it! What's that? What am I running? I have to be honest, I'd like to try out Windows Server 2008 as a desktop OS but I'm sticking to Vista because I do not have enough time.

.. and beautiful women like Vista more ;-)
