Windows Server 2008 June 2007 CTP

Microsoft has released the June 2007 Community Technology Preview (CTP) of Windows Server 2008. This Community Technology Preview is not like Beta 3 which added many great new features. The Windows Server 2008 June 2007 CTP is really only about IIS 7.0. This CTP makes it possible to choose the IIS server role as one of the Server Core roles. This CTP isn't publicly available. If you're an MSDN or Technet subscriber or if you are participating in the Windows Server 2008 technical beta, you can download and try out the Windows Server 2008 June 2007 CTP.

Just in case you don't know what the Server Core roles in Windows Server 2008 are, here's a short recap: the Server Core installation provides a minimal environment for running specific server roles. The Server Core roles are:

• IIS 7.0 (new)
• Active Directory Domain Services
• Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS)
• Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Server
• DNS Server
• File Services
• Print Server
• Streaming Media Services
• Microsoft Failover Cluster (feature)
• Network Load Balancing (feature)

Since a server core installation only installs what's needed (not even the explorer shell- no more Windows...) to provide in that specific role, the benefits are obvious: Smaller attack service, less disk space (2 GB max.) and less management (less components to manage).
