Just in case you don't know what the Server Core roles in Windows Server 2008 are, here's a short recap: the Server Core installation provides a minimal environment for running specific server roles. The Server Core roles are: • IIS 7.0 (new) • Active Directory Domain Services • Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS) • Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Server • DNS Server • File Services • Print Server • Streaming Media Services • Microsoft Failover Cluster (feature) • Network Load Balancing (feature) Since a server core installation only installs what's needed (not even the explorer shell- no more Windows...) to provide in that specific role, the benefits are obvious: Smaller attack service, less disk space (2 GB max.) and less management (less components to manage).
